I repeated this process a few times and recovered almost everything off the drive. After 10-15 minutes, explorer started hanging again, so I disconnected it and put it back in the freezer. Immediately started copying the most important files off. Pulled it out, hooked it up.I could browse the drive without explorer hanging. Left it in the freezer for a couple of hours. I put it in an antistatic bag, wrapped that it a hand towel (hoping to keep moisture from the drive), then put that inside a freezer bag and sealed it (pressing out as much air as possible to minimize condensation in the bag).

After trying a few other things including recovery software that had worked on some other drives, I finally resorted to the freezer trick (this was a personal drive that had photo's I wanted back, but not worth paying 1000's for recovery). Tried connecting the old drive up to see if I could copy files off it, and explorer would just hang. I say that because he recommended trying it, and because I personally have recovered data by doing it. Nor myself have a clue how a hard drive works.
